Caroline Sheds Her Training Wheels

All I have to say is, “Watch out, Kwajalein!” We have another four-year-old biker on the loose! We determined that Caroline had become too dependent on her training wheels when she consistently stopped in the middle of bicycle “traffic” to concentrate on singing a song on the way home from preschool. One of our Christmas presents to ourselves was to remove Caroline’s training wheels to encourage her to keep up with the flow of the noon rush-hour traffic (er, rush-five-minute traffic).

Fortunately for us, Caroline is extremely determined to prove how she is a “big” girl. As expected, things were a little shaky at the beginning of the week, but you can see her zooming around the island by New Year’s Eve. Yay, Caroline!

Merry Kwaj Christmas

How do you celebrate Christmas when it’s 87 degrees and extremely humid outside? That’s what this family of northern, cold-weather transplants wanted to know. Apparently, you celebrate with Christmas lights on houses and sailboats, with displays of nativity sets from around the world, and with frequent visits by Santa Claus, who sometimes comes out of the water! It’s not quite the same as sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace after shoveling six inches of snow from your driveway, but this is how we celebrate Christmas in the “Kwaj condition.”

Sit back, relax, and enjoy a Kwaj Christmas. There’s nothing quite like it.

Christmas in the Marshall Islands

Marshallese Christmas celebrations are filled with traditional song and dance starting early in the morning on Christmas day and lasting late into the evening. We were fortunate enough to get an advance peek at this celebration when a jebta (“chapter”) from neighboring Ebeye island came to perform along with a local Kwajalein jebta. The Ebeye jebta (dressed in red and white) performs a dance that symbolizes how the gospel came to the Marshall Islands, i.e., by boat, in the 1800s. The Kwajalein jebta, dressed in green, performs later.

After watching this video clip, you may find it hard to believe that we actually do miss the cold weather sometimes. Well, since it doesn’t really cool down here during the “winter” months, we may as well enjoy some fun in the sun! This is how we spent part of November just after receiving our underwater camera case.
