IMG_0819.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 We took a flight to Roi on Saturday evening and found that kids are allowed in the pool on any day but Sunday. So, after having dinner in the dining hall, we went for a quick swim in the pool under the lights.
IMG_0821.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 After the excitement of being away and sleeping in the same room, the kids finally fell asleep.
IMG_0825.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 While Daddy packed up the suitcases Christopher and Caroline played hide & seek in our adjoining rooms.
IMG_0827.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 We got up early enough to rent a cart before they were all gone.
IMG_0828.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 On our tour of the island, we looked for a nice place to swim. The sign on the tree says that this area is closed for swimming.
IMG_0830.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Part of our tour consisted of visiting many of the World War II historical sites on the island. Here you can see a Japanese cannon in the background.

IMG_0832.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Some sort of Japanese bunker that is still standing. This one is located next to the sewage treatment plant (the fence to the right). You can see that the kids are enjoying the fragrance.
IMG_0835.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 There are many uncrowded beaches here.
IMG_0837.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Here we are on one of the fairways of the 9-hole golf course on Roi. These are considered the "back 9" since the "front 9" are on the island of Kwajalein.
IMG_0838.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 At the west end of the golf course is the Japanese memorial cemetery.

IMG_0845.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 The American use of Kwajalein Atoll has the main contingent of people and supplies on the island of Kwajalein (where we live). During the Japanese occupation, however, the islands of Roi and Namur were connected by landfill and became the main hub of their activity. There was even a Japanese torpedo factory here. In this picture, you can see the ruins of the Japanese headquarters building.

IMG_0848.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Here we are looking at ALTAIR, the largest radar here.

IMG_0854.jpg Date: 10/30/2007 The sacrifice of American lives to drive the Japanese out of the Marshall Islands in WWII. Considering that the taking of Kwajalein Atoll was one of the more successful campaigns, we can truly see how costly WWII was.

IMG_0858.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Strangely, there are wild chickens on Roi.
IMG_0861.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 "Finally, Daddy's history lesson is through, and now we can swim!"
IMG_0862.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Here, we're on the lagoon on the Roi side of the island.
IMG_0864.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 One of our favorite activities for the weekend was to collect large pieces of coral that had washed up on the beach.
IMG_0867.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 After spending a couple of hours on the Roi side, we ventured over to the Namur side to swim at a beach with a very large sandbar.

IMG_0896.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Christopher thought it was funny that he had "found" the place where safety begins.
IMG_0898.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 Here we are with boarding cards waiting to board the airplane.
IMG_0899.jpg Date: 10/29/2007 This is the outside waiting area, which becomes much more pleasant after someone turns on the fans. Most people remain inside the air-conditioned building until the plane is ready to leave.
