Field Trip to Pegasus

Have you ever wanted to get on an airplane with a rocket strapped to it? Well, we did. Christopher's second grade class took a field trip to see the Pegasus rocket strapped to the bottom of an L-1011 aircraft. We didn't get to fly, and the rocket actually drops from the aircraft before it ignites. The rocket will be carrying a satellite for the U.S. Air Force. This airplane was formerly a passenger airplane for Air Canada until Orbital Sciences bought the plane and converted it to a launch platform in the early 1990s. Coincidentally, this is the same aircraft that I (Mark) saw at Vandenberg AFB in the mid 1990s.
